Nonnenhof

Brygidki

History

The Nonnenhof (Nuns' Courtyard) formed, together with the Bridgettine convent and church founded in 1396, a district exempt from municipal jurisdiction. The non-guild craftsmen living there were a constant source of complaints from the city's guilds, who regarded them as "Beschädiger" (damagers) - tradesmen whose unregulated competition harmed the established guild businesses.

Because the convent grounds were not subject to the city's courts, a number of craftsmen who did not belong to any guild settled here. Disputes over this situation persisted essentially as long as the city maintained its independence. The street's modern Polish name translates as "Brigittine," after the Bridgettine religious order.
