Belgardsche Gasse

History

In 1357, the lane was mentioned without its own name, referred to merely as "twergasse" (cross-lane). In 1415 it appeared as "arta platea scilicet Belgardesche gasse." This name has nothing to do with the Pomeranian town of Belgard; rather, like Putzkergasse, it is derived from a personal name.

The current name can be documented with certainty from 1465 in ground-rent registers as "twernegasse." Originally, however, it applied to the neighboring Tagnetergasse, where it appears as early as 1415 as "czwernegasse." Between 1415 and 1465, the name was then transferred to the present lane.

So originally, the later Tagnetergasse was called Zwirngasse (Thread Lane). Only after 1415 was this name transferred to what had previously been the Belgardsche Gasse. The name was derived from the thread makers or thread traders who lived here.
